Paul Poirot is a decisive and accomplished attorney with over 25 years of experience licensing technology around the world.

Paul’s current practice focuses on counseling clients on agreements and relationships relating to SaaS, technology and professional services, and regulations related to data privacy and cybersecurity.

Paul previously worked for Hitachi, Ltd. in its Tokyo office, negotiating and finalizing patent licenses and technology transfer agreements around the world, including in South Korea, Taiwan, the United Kingdom, France, Germany and the United States.  During this time, he successfully negotiated with international technology vendors, including IBM, Samsung, TSMC, Alcatel, Philips, Qualcomm and Apple.

Before joining Bortstein Legal Group, Paul was a partner in the Washington, DC offices of Baker Hostetler and McDermott, Will & Emery, focusing on licensing and patent litigation.  He frequently counseled C-suite executives and general counsel on licensing, business risk, and litigation strategies.  Over the course of his law firm experience, Paul completed over 250 SaaS licenses, patent licenses, and trade secret agreements, including with major licensing entities such as Intellectual Ventures, Tessera and Round Rock Research.

Apart from his licensing experience, Paul has litigated in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, in U.S. Federal District Courts across the country, and before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.  His pro bono activities have focused on obtaining immigration status for refugees, securing benefits for U.S. military veterans, and protecting the rights of tenants in Washington, DC and the surrounding areas.

Paul has extensive cultural and practical knowledge of Japan and Asia and has traveled in the region almost 100 times.

Paul received his J.D. from the University of Chicago, where he was a member of the The University of Chicago Law Review.  He received his B.S. in electrical engineering magna cum laude from Texas A&M University.
